The Atkin Memorial Scholarships

These scholarships were donated by Bro. W. Merton Atkin, Past Grand Patron of Alberta. Recipients must be members in good standing in the Alberta Order of the Eastern Star or the spouses, children or grandchildren of members in good standing.

University of Lethbridge

The amount of this Atkin scholarship is $1,000.00 minimum. It is awarded on the basis of academic achievement (at least 10 courses 30.0 credit hours). Dates for applications are: May 1 - continuing students; June 15 - transfer students.

Application forms may be obtained from the University of Lethbridge directly through the Student Awards Office.

University of Calgary

The value of this Atkin scholarship is up to $3,000.00. It is awarded for academic achievement in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th years in any faculty. The date for application is August 1st.

PLEASE NOTE: Applicants applying for either scholarship must contact the university concerned directly. The Order of the Eastern Star in Alberta does not participate in any way with the administration of these scholarships. A written acknowledgement to the Order of the Eastern Star would be appreciated.

(Eastern Star Training Awards for Religious Leadership)

The Order of the Eastern Star provides scholarships to students studying for full time service in a Protestant or Roman Catholic church or Jewish tradition at an accredited College or University. The scholarships are to assist those seeking a career in various fields of religious leadership such as ordination or diaconal programs, missionaries, director of church music or religious education, counsellors or youth leadership.

An applicant need not be affiliated with the Masonic Fraternity or the Order of the Eastern Star.

The amount of the scholarship varies each year and is dependent upon:

  • Amount of funds available
  • Need of the applicant
  • Number of qualified applicants

Rules of the Program:

  • Applicant must be a resident of the Province of Alberta and a Canadian citizen.
  • Must be sponsored by an O.E.S. member in good standing in an Alberta Chapter.
  • Enrolled in an educational program preparing them for religious leadership. A complete academic record must accompany the application.

How to Apply:

  • Application forms can be obtained from the Secretary of an Alberta O.E.S. Chapter or on this website.
  • Application must bear the official seal of the Alberta Chapter sponsoring the applicant.
  • The ESTARL Committee must receive the completed application form by March 15.
